Let’s face it: almost every one of us has quit a game in frustration. The act of hurling a controller (or slamming a mouse) and giving up is so famous in gaming that it has even been given its own affectionate name: ‘rage quit.’ So many unexpected deaths and unsolved challenges face today’s gamer than [...]

The Millenial generation is nothing if not creative. Check out what the SurfaceScapes team at Carnegie Mellon has done with a Microsoft Surface. They’ve converted the giant screen-table into a platform for the original pen-and-paper roleplaying game, Dungeons and Dragons. It’s too geeky–and too beautiful–for words. Which is why I have a video:

Nintendo and Microsoft have picked pretty catchy, marketable names for their motion-sensitive controllers. ‘Wiimote’ is silly but memorable enough to stick in people’s minds; ‘Project Natal’ is so weird that you just have to Google it. But Sony hasn’t yet decided on a great name for its own wand controller:

Consoles modded to play import games or offer increased portability are pretty sweet. It takes some real technical know-how to crack open the pearly white shell of a 360 and introduce capabilities outside the system’s original design. The whole culture of console modification is pretty interesting–there are people out there with a huge degree of [...]

The Tokyo Game Show is on everybody’s mind right now. It’s one of the biggest expos of the year, and it’s a chance for the world to look at a massive cultural center for gaming. Still, there’s a lot more going on than just demos, interviews and panels. TGS is a battleground for the two [...]

I just got my free one-month of Netflix, and I couldn’t be more excited. The little movie distributor that could has completely won me over. Natalie, of course, has used the service for months; over time, she’s had access to a wide array of titles across multiple genres. Now, it’s my turn to give Netflix [...]

More than any other genre, the RPG has always revered its elders. The graybeards who created the swords-and-sorcery, number-crunching world of the modern RPG, and the ancients who enjoyed these first forays into the realm, are held in high esteem by newer converts. I’m more than a mere acolyte, but even I must submit to [...]

I think downloadable content is the future of the video gaming industry. When I take a look at popular games today, it seems that many of them have been bolstered by online expansion packs, new characters and maps, or add-on episodes available through digital retailers. The first game that comes to mind with this sort [...]

If you’re a regular reader, then you know I’m a pretty big fan of XBOX Live. The interface, connectivity, and social networking features all pretty much line up with how I felt online gaming should go as we moved closer towards robots destroying us all and overtaking the Earth. Now, it looks like [...]

Last year at E3, Microsoft announced a South Park game, but since then, we’ve had nothing to show for it but all these doodles in my notebook of Cartman rescuing Princess Toadstool from Mecha Robert Smith and Mother Brain. Seems we have to wait no more, as the game will be unveiled at San [...]
